McGill Inches From History

In a hard fought match that was scoreless at the half, it was the boys from Harvard that pushed forward on the final play of the match for the winning try to snatch victory away from the McGill MBA squad. The final score of 10-7 was indicative of just how close this match was. With both teams covered in mud, the match featured big hits, and some messy loose play with a slick ball, but most of the battles were up front as the forwards from both sides proved their worth with strong scrums, rucks and mauls.

The first half saw Harvard hold territorial advantage for long stretches of time but the McGill defence held strong and kept the HBS boys from scoring. The second half started with more back and forth play but mid-way through HBS was able to slip a man off the side of a maul and move ahead 5-0. The score seemed to energize the McGill boys as they quickly responded with some good ball, quickly gaining ground into the Harvard half of the field. The McGill ruggers kept advancing the ball down the field with a combination of speed and power and after one successful goal-line stand by Harvard, McGill captain Will Yeung was able to break through and tie the match at 5. Steve Choi's successful conversion put McGill ahead 7-5 and it looked like history was in the making as McGill was in position for their first win over Harvard in the traditional fall match.

More back and forth play followed as Harvard pressed to put points on the board. The McGill defence stood tall, forcing back numerous advances, but the HBS forward push proved too much when on the final play of the game their maul was able to push McGill back and pick up a loose ball to score the go-ahead try in the corner. Final score: Harvard 10 -- McGill 7.

All of the players on both sides are to be congratulated for their spirited and fair play in tough (but extremely fun) playing conditions.

Both teams would like to thank all of the fans for their support; it was great to see everyone out there cheering us on.

Earlier in the day the McGill girls took to the field and faced a team from the Montreal Irish and in muddy conditions both teams managed to score two tries, ending in a tie. Way to go girls!

Saturday is a Rugby Day -- Harvard weekend is here!!

This weekend is the highlight of the fall rugby season when Harvard makes the trip to Montreal to play games against our men's and women's teams. The Harvard weekend is not just for the rugby players, everyone is encouraged to come down to the field on Saturday to cheer your two McGill MBA teams on. This includes students, faculty and alumni as many players from the past come back to McGill for this traditional match. On Saturday evening there will be social activities to have some fun with the group from Harvard and to show them what McGill spirit is really about.
